How to Pick Peaches: A Guide to Harvesting Perfectly Ripe Fruit

Peach season is one of our favorite seasons, in large because peaches are only available for such a short time – so we do our best to savor every moment possible. Guests from all over the US flock to our Pick-Your-Own Farm in southern Illinois to savor the joy of peach picking. There’s something truly special about biting into a juicy, tree-ripened peach you’ve picked yourself. To help you make the most of your visit, here’s a comprehensive guide on how to pick peaches like a pro.

When are Peaches Ready to Be Picked?

Peach picking season typically starts in late June and can extend through mid-August, depending on the variety. Most guests enjoy picking peaches in the morning when the temperatures are cooler, beating the heat and allowing more time for other indoor fun at our farm. Always check our website or social media for the most up-to-date picking information.

Know Your Peaches

Understanding the different peach varieties can enhance your picking experience. There are two main types: clingstone and freestone. Clingstone peaches have flesh that clings to the pit, while freestone peaches have flesh that separates easily. Freestone peaches are often preferred, however the Clingstone varieties that we grow on our farm are still packed full of the delicious flavor making them a treat even though they are stubborn to get off the pit.

Look for Signs of Ripeness

When selecting peaches, it’s crucial to choose ones that are ripe and ready to eat. Here are some key indicators:

Color

Ripe peaches have a deep golden-yellow color. Avoid those with green undertones as they are not yet ripe. Additionally, some varieties may have a slight blush or rosy hue on their skin, but this alone isn’t a reliable indicator of ripeness. The primary focus should be on the golden background color.

Touch

Gently press the peach with your thumb. A ripe peach will yield slightly to pressure but should not be too soft or mushy. This is particularly important. Pick firm peaches as they will travel better. Keep in mind that peaches will continue to ripen after being picked, so if you prefer to store them for a few days, selecting peaches that are a bit firmer can be beneficial. However, if you’re planning to eat them right away, go for the ones that have a bit more give.

Smell

A ripe peach emits a sweet, fragrant aroma. If it smells like a peach, it’s ready to be picked. This classic indicator should never be overlooked – the sweeter and more intense the smell, the more likely the fruit is ripe. Avoid peaches with no aroma, as this could indicate they were harvested too early.

Shape

Ripe peaches should have a round, plump shape. They should not have any flat areas or pointed tips. An evenly rounded peach typically means it has had adequate time to develop and mature on the tree.

Size

While size alone isn’t a definitive indicator of ripeness, it can give you clues about the fruit’s development. Larger peaches often have had more time to mature on the tree. However, don’t dismiss smaller peaches; they can also be sweet and full of flavor, especially if they meet the other ripeness criteria.

Peach Picking Technique

To avoid damaging the fruit or the tree, use the proper picking technique:

Gently grasp the peach: Cup the fruit in your hand, and make sure to support its weight.

Twist and lift: Give the peach a gentle twist while lifting it upward. A ripe peach should easily detach from the tree. If it requires force, it’s not ready to be picked.

Place the peach gently in your box to avoid bruising. We will provide picking containers for you – no need to bring your own.

Post-Picking Care

After you’ve picked your peaches, it’s important to handle them gently to maintain their quality. One crucial tip is to avoid stacking them too high in your basket since excessive weight can cause bruising and damage the delicate fruit.

When it comes to storing your peaches, it’s best to keep them at room temperature if you plan to eat them within a few days. Lay them out on a flat surface instead of piling them up. This method helps them to ripen evenly and prevents them from becoming overly soft or squished.

Enjoy Your Harvest

Only pick what you can eat in the next few days. The peaches will continue to soften on your counter. Make several trips to the farm during peach season, so you always have the freshest fruit possible.

There are countless ways to enjoy your freshly picked peaches:

  • Fresh: Eat them as a healthy snack, add to salads, or blend into smoothies.
  • Baked: Use them in pies, cobblers, and tarts for a delicious dessert.
  • Preserved: Can or freeze peaches to enjoy their summer flavor year-round.
  • Grilled: Enhance your BBQ experience by grilling peach halves and serving them with ice cream or as a side dish.
